Journal Entry 10/31

Woke up extra early and dashed to Ida's in record time because I thought the group and I were going to do something (calendar planning) but I was wrong. SO I ended up the first one there waiting for the others and we didn't even have time to do it because everyone was late. Ida did, however, give me the "advanced" flashcards and told me she expected me to learn all of them by December WTF - pressure's on. We switched class up a bit and did 1-on-1s for 30 minutes each which was nice. We also did a lot of cultural explanations after class to learn more about Gambians and the way their society works. A nice boy gave me a pencil and another little boy (4 years old) told his grandma I was his wife. Which meant I will need to do his laundry. Eff that, I'll never be wife status.

After class, I went to successfully buy a bar of laundry soap, washed my water filter (pain in the ass), massaged my host mom, and taught kids "I wash my hands with soap" for 1.5 hours via paper and pen, experimentation, backwards, forwards, and Christ it was hard. I was even all ambitious going in to teach "I wash my hands with soap for 20 seconds" ... yeah not yet. SOME DAY. Slowly slowly. I also showed my host family the garden which is starting to come up with some sprouts! And weeds. But that's besides the point. Tomorrow's test day, after which I will pamper myself with exercise, proper primping and cleaning of the toes, and shaving. I feel like a gorilla.

ALSO it's Halloween! I guess I am a toubab (what natives call foreigners here) this year.
